Nox Group

Building A Foundation: Insights From Our Internship Program

Nox Group’s internship program has grown rapidly over the past few summers.

Starting with just 4 local college interns in 2023, the program has now expanded to over 30 interns spanning 3 different states. We are committed to immersing and educating the younger generation in order to ensure the most successful and smooth transition into the evolving construction industry.

Hear from some of our 2025 interns about their personal experience with Nox Group and its unique summer internship program. Trent Bell, Michael Krichbaum, and Liam Fraser each give their take, as well as share facts about how they operated and what they did this summer.

Trent Bell, Purdue University, studying Construction Management – 1st summer with Nox Group.

Michael Krichbaum, Northern Arizona University, studying Construction Management – 2nd summer with Nox Group.

Liam FraserNorthern Arizona University, studying Construction Management – 3rd summer with Nox Group.

Q: For someone considering this internship, what should they expect day-to-day?

A: Trent – “They should expect to be challenged day to day to perform and excel at small tasks that have a big impact on the entire project. Be prepared to talk to the foreman and be able to pass on information from the trailer to the field and from the field to the trailer.”

A: Michael – “Expect to have a hand in just about everything. If no one is offering to give out work, then go find it and ask for it; there is always something to do. The day-to-day will be wildly different. Some days you are outside all day laying out survey points, and others you may just be inside flying the model and reading plans.”

Q: Has there been a certain project or task that you are especially proud of being a part of?

A: Liam – “I have handled my own scopes in estimating this summer and have had to meet real-life deadlines. Having the opportunity to carry some of the weight and responsibility on the team or being asked to perform is something I am especially proud of.”

A: Michael – “There hasn’t been one specific task that stands out above the rest, but what I’m most proud of is the impact each task has had on supporting the team. Every responsibility I’ve taken on this summer, whether it’s creating markups to help the field install security cameras more efficiently or ordering materials each week to ensure the foremen have everything they need to build, has contributed to the success of the project. That sense of being a reliable part of the team is what I take the most pride in.”

Q: What skills or experience have you gained during your time here?

A: Liam – “I have gained real-life applicable experience while interning for Nox Group. I’ve learned an immense amount about the industry and feel much more confident on my way to starting my career. I have also learned many skills like leadership, communication, and adaptability that have made me a stronger individual and have helped prepare me for challenges and situations I will be involved with in the future.”

A: Michael – “I have gained a great understanding of electrical and what it takes to build data centers. I am also highly proficient in document management, RFIs, submittals, permits, transmittals, Bluebeam, Navisworks, reading drawings & specs, layout, and much more.”

Q: Can you speak about the relationships you’ve built, both with other interns and full-time employees?

A: Liam – “I have met many friends and mentors. Some fellow interns are now my roommates, mentors who taught me life and business lessons and who still check up on me, and many other coworkers who couldn’t have been more willing to help me grow and succeed.”

A: Michael – “One relationship I’ve built over time is with one of our craft workers. During one of our weekly Wednesday safety meetings, we discussed an incident where someone had tripped in a small pothole in the dirt parking lot and badly bruised his knee. The root cause was poor visibility, since the lights hadn’t been turned on yet; it was still dark outside. A few days later, I noticed him limping around the site. I made a point to check in with him, ask how he was doing, and make sure he was okay. From that day on, I continued to stop by daily, just to see how he was feeling and if he needed anything. He really appreciated me stopping in, as we would always exchange smiles, say a few sentences and be on our way. Nothing more than a minute or so, but I believe these small moments of checking in can go a long way. They show people that they’re valued, and that someone genuinely cares.”

Q: Do you feel this internship has offered strong networking opportunities within the construction industry?

A: Trent – “My internship with Nox Group allows me to build a stronger resume and have more to talk about when talking to executives at other companies.”

A: Michael – “I do. I believe that the Friday fireside chats and the networking events create huge opportunities for us to network within this industry and build relationships for the rest of our lives.”

Q: How would you describe the Friday fireside chats, and what purpose do they serve for interns?

A: Trent – “The Friday fireside chats have been some of the most memorable moments of the internship. The amount of knowledge I have been able to accrue by listening to the leaders who have come before me is what sets this internship apart, showing that Nox Group cares about our futures and wants us to grow not only in our construction skills but also in our day-to-day life.”

A: Liam – “The fireside chats are an opportunity for interns to build relationships with, ask questions to, and gain knowledge from the people who lead this company. Having the opportunity to learn from a new executive member of the company every week is so beneficial to the entire intern process.”

Q: Who was your favorite speaker, and what made their chat stand out?

A: Trent – “My favorite fireside chat was either the chat with Alex Troyer and David Pollard or with Justin Martin. Their talks stood out because of the outlook they have on their own careers and the battles they have overcome to get where they are today. Not only giving their career stories but relating them to our current situations and giving us advice to succeed in this industry.”

A: Liam – “My favorite summer speakers were David Pollard and Alex Troyer. What stood out most to me was their clear ambition and the drive that they had to have to get to where they are. Also, how they maintain that drive while striving for the success of the company and the people within it.”

Q: Were there any key takeaways or memorable quotes from the fireside Chats that really stuck with you?

A: Trent – “Some key takeaways from the fireside chats were an emphasis on empathy for others around you. The idea that we are there to support the craft workers, the people who produce tangible value day in and day out for the company. Never feeling like you are above the craft and making sure you put yourself on the same level as them.”

A: Liam – “There were many key takeaways and memorable quotes from the fireside chats that stuck with me. A few examples are to work hard, build relationships, be curious, over-deliver, and take opportunities.”

Q: What did you think of the group workout at the Apex, and do you think it accurately demonstrates Nox Group’s commitment to employee well-being?

A: Trent – “I think it was a great team bonding experience and showed me that Nox Group not only cares about how we perform at work but wants us to be the best well-rounded individuals we can be. Not only do they push us to excel at our jobs, but they also push us to focus on our well-being and personal nutrition. Many fireside chats also emphasized this point, showing it is a theme in the culture at Nox Group.”

A: Michael – “I loved the group workout at the Apex. I truly appreciate Nox Group for their support of a healthy lifestyle inside and outside the office. I believe any opportunity to workout with your coworkers is always a good time.”

Q: What expectations did you have going into this internship, and how has the reality compared?

A: Trent – “I expected a fast-paced environment, and it has definitely proven to be that. I enjoy being in the moment and not knowing what lies ahead each day. If issues arise, I am able to attack them with the support of the team.”

A: Liam – “Before I started, it was to see progression in the program’s structure and intent of care. The reality of my internship this year has been just that. I have been a part of this program for some time, and it just keeps getting better.”

Q: After your internship experience, would you recommend this internship? Are you considering joining one of the Nox Group companies full-time after college?

A: Trent – “After this internship, I would 100% recommend Nox Group to peers in Construction Management. Just based on the culture alone, I foresee great things out of Nox Group in the future and much room for growth. If offered an opportunity, I would 100% consider Nox Group as a full-time position after college. I appreciate the opportunities I have been given to not only improve my skills on the jobsite through a dedicated Project team, but to also become a more well-rounded human being through the fireside chats every Friday.”

A: Liam – “If you are looking to intern for an evolving and growing company that prioritizes its people while still maintaining quality in its work, then Nox Group is the place to be. I am considering joining one of the Nox Group companies full-time after college.”
