Discovering New Lengths: Our Summer Internship Highlights

Nox Group Interns

The most exciting part of a future career is that the options are endless. Sometimes, all it takes is one opportunity to turn curiosity into clarity.

This summer, 32 interns joined Nox Group with a willingness to learn and a curiosity about the construction industry. Through hands-on experience, skill development, and mentorship, Nox Group offers students a 12-week summer internship that turns valuable insights into a career in the trades.

We take pride in encouraging the new generation to explore the trades, and we strive to accurately represent what an industrial construction enterprise can offer them in a career. Interns are expected to shadow their mentors, attend meetings, assist with tasks, follow day-to-day schedules, and most importantly, ask questions! While paired in teams across the enterprise, our interns build lasting connections that leave an impact.

Here is a look at the time spent by a few interns in our Northwest Nevada region:

Julia Wordley | Mechanical Engineering Major at University of Nevada, Reno

University of Nevada, Reno - Nox Group Intern - Julia Wordley

During her time spent at Nox Group, Julia was eager to expand her understanding of construction and electrical work. She was quickly met with guiding peers who helped grow her curiosity. Julia learned to read and interpret electrical one-line diagrams, along with gaining more experience in programs such as Bluebeam and Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC).

Julia recalls that what drew her to the internship was “how they described a career that combined the teamwork and communication of construction with the technical problem-solving side of engineering that [she] loves.” The people she worked with became her favorite part of the internship. She worked alongside many mentors like Gilad Amir (Field Engineer) and Donal Rabon (Field Superintendent) who explained the full picture of electrical work on a data center. Through the connections she made during her internship, she gained confidence for her future endeavours within engineering.

Michael Dineen | Construction Management Major at Northern Arizona University

Northern Arizona University - Nox Group Intern - Michael Dineen (center person)

As Michael Dineen was determined to apply what he learned in Construction Management classes to real-world situations, he witnessed how crucial meetings with efficient communication are, since “information is introduced and it is vital to be flexible.” While working with his team and mentors, he gained more experience in programs such as Bluebeam, Procore, and ACC.

Michael also found himself adopting critical-thinking skills as he took part in our Northern Nevada project. His biggest takeaway for others in search of a construction internship is “it is not just technical skills that make you successful, but the ability to change when necessary, to learn quickly, and have good communication skills that drive the project’s success.“

Edwin Umanzor | Construction Management Major at University of Houston

University of Houston - Nox Group Intern - Edwin Umanzor

Edwin gained firsthand experience in the fast-paced nature of construction projects, with everyday elements changing around your team. Throughout the project, Edwin “observed how quickly the team had to respond to unexpected challenges while working under tight schedules. It was impressive to see how everyone collaborated to find solutions and keep the project on track without falling behind on deadlines.”

During his time at Nox Group, Edwin learned to use ACC for project management flow and the importance of communication. With this foundation, he also stepped out of his comfort zone to build strong relationships among his peers, which he found to be more rewarding. Edwin could see himself becoming a more dedicated and confident individual who isn’t afraid to ask questions and lend a helping hand.

Adam Dias | Mechanical Engineering Major at University of Nevada, Reno

University of Nevada, Reno - Nox Group Intern - Adam Dias

Adam was grateful to learn a lot on a functional job site that his college classes could only teach in lectures. He enjoyed the hands-on training and solving of real problems out in the field with his own data-tracking skills. He became more proficient in Excel and Bluebeam while learning the importance of strong communication and meaningful teamwork.

Determined to excel in a new environment with a lot of technical terminology, Adam studied the drawings, documents, and labels on all the equipment. By doing this, he gained a new understanding of electrical engineering and became proud to overcome an obstacle. He found that each role works together out on the field since “there’s no way for you to fail if you put in the effort and ask questions to the right people.”

Kysen Rios | Construction Management Major at Northern Arizona University

Northenr Arizona University - Nos Group Intern - Kysen Rios
Northenr Arizona University - Nos Group Intern - Kysen Rios

Kysen felt accomplished taking on several tasks as an intern at Nox Group. He found many mentors willing to answer his questions and help him adjust to the pace of work. Lane Moore, VP of Operations, educated him on how the construction industry operates and the value of decision-making across different teams and stakeholders. He offered support to Kysen when teaching moments would present themselves and made a lasting impression to further his understanding of construction management.

When given responsibilities within prefab and purchasing, Kysen took charge to develop proficiency in KOJO (their material management software), purchasing, and reading electrical sheets. Kysen embraced the challenge of adapting to a new environment and felt accomplished after “having the effort he put in [was] acknowledged and made him feel like he was doing the right thing in the end.” Through his internship, Kysen learned the value of communication and trusting his teammates. He discovered new lengths he is capable of and believes he can become a balanced leader in the future.

Growing the Next Generation of Industrial Experts

Growing the Next Generation of Industrial Experts - Nox Group Interns

While these stories represent just a fraction of our interns’ experiences, a common theme appears throughout each story: growth. Whether learning new software, gaining confidence on a jobsite, building professional relationships, or discovering a passion for the construction industry, each intern left with valuable lessons that extend far beyond a single summer. We are proud to have built a program that enables students to earn future roles with our enterprise by returning to us as interns or joining us full-time.

Hearing that our interns were met with listening ears and guiding support reinforces our goal of Humanizing Construction, starting with the next generation of industrial experts. We are proud to offer an environment where students can gain foundational skills while learning the importance of teamwork, safety, communication, and leadership.
