Getting started in the construction industry can be challenging when you are unsure of where to begin. There are many great outlets available to obtain the proper knowledge, guidance, and information to help kickstart your career. Here is a list of steps our VP, Talent Acquisition recommends you take in order to join the skilled trades whether it be in electrical, HVAC, mechanical, or others of your interest.
1. Do Your Research
Take a look at the potential career paths within the trades and see if there is one that is right for you. You may consider:
- What do these individual trades entail?
- What would your day-to-day look like?
- What type of environment will you be working in?
- What skills or certifications do you need?
These are just a few of the questions you should ask yourself in order to determine if the trades are right for you or what avenue you want to go down.
2. Consider Joining a Pre-Apprenticeship Program
Once you have figured out which direction you would like to pursue, we recommend finding a good pre-apprenticeship program where you will get the opportunity to begin your journey.
We have a partnership with GCU’s Electrical Program where you will learn the foundations of the electrical trade and get the training needed to start your career. If you are a student enrolled at GCU, you can apply to join our 4-month long program where you will get the chance to learn, grow, and develop your skills early on to get a proper feel for the industry at no additional cost.
3. Look into an Apprenticeship Program
If you went down the route of completing a pre-apprenticeship program or if you want to sharpen your skills for career advancement in your preferred craft, you can search for an apprenticeship program to apply to. These programs typically last for 4 years and you will get hands-on experience in the field as well as classroom training while you learn the ins and outs of your specified trade. You will learn discipline, reliability, and other skills needed for success. This is a great opportunity to give yourself a boost both professionally and personally in the workforce.
Our Electrical Contractor, Corbins, has partnered with WECA and IEC to bring effective, valuable electrical apprenticeship programs to the Arizona workforce. Participants will get the opportunity to earn while they learn from highly qualified teachers, receive up-to-date National Electric Code-based curriculum information, and apply hands-on training.
4. Find the right company for you
Lastly, find the right company for you that prioritizes career development by offering individual growth opportunities. We suggest searching for a company that aligns with your values and has a great company culture.
